Iboga root barks, that is  Tabernanthe iboga  is  a perennial rainforest shrub and psychedelic, native to western Central Africa. Iboga root barks when chowed stimulates the central nervous system when taken in small doses. And  in larger doses induces hallucinations .

Iboga root barks has considerable potential in the treatment of hard drug addiction. For example heroin, suboxone, methadone, cocaine, crack , alcohol  and Other conditions . There are also indications that it may be useful in the treatment of tobacco addiction.              

Iboga also offers opportunities as psychotherapy and/or spiritual teacher. As of psychotherapy, Iboga root barks are used as a treatment for trauma or conditioning, like asthma, cornice pain etc.

Traditional Iboga Use

Bwiti practitioners from African nations like Gabon, Cameroon, and the Congo Republic consider the iboga plant central to their religion. Some say warthogs first led the Bwiti to the shrub. They experimented with the plant and soon learned that in small doses, iboga root barks reduced the need for sleep and  heightened awareness of one’s surroundings—particularly useful during hunting. In larger doses, they unlocked the psychedelic properties, experienced as a kind of sacrament. That transported people to the spirit world to undergo a deeply reflective death and rebirth experience. Afterward, they would emerge into a more spiritual and harmonious life.

Initition

The Bwiti ceremonies developed around the iboga plant include the initiation of adolescents into adulthood and rituals. It’s involving music and dancing that cement community bonds and align the participants with the wisdom and clarity of the unseen realms. It is referred to as an “oneirophrenic” as it can induce a waking dream state, although this is not always the case. Participants in these rituals report strong hallucinations and a powerful sense of being able to see into their life, habits, and past with unparalleled clarity. Over time, as some of these rituals were shared with foreigners, iboga became similarly beloved and renowned outside of the Bwiti peoples. The roots are considered to be aphrodisiac, febrifuge and tonic.

Effects

Iboga root barks induces an introspective experience that is often referred to as deeply psychotherapeutic.  An experience with iboga root barks is not considered hallucinogenic because the individual is usually aware , that the experience is caused by the ingestion of iboga and that the visions that one has during the experience are internal projections.

The initial phase of the experience can often consist of intense visual. Which lasting between  7 and 12 hours and is often saturated with information.  During the following 24 hours of the experience. The visionary phase ends and the contents of the experience can be integrated in a cognitive process. This integration process may continue to develop in daily life for months. As the individual re-defines their identity and interpersonal dynamics related to their environment.

For those suffering from PTSD, this can be extremely powerful, as iboga allows the patient to confront the trauma and pain behind the condition.
